MOSCOW/WASHINGTON — Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, using the occasion to congratulate the American leader on his 80th birthday while discussing key international and bilateral issues, according to the Kremlin. 

The call, which reportedly lasted about 55 minutes, was described by Kremlin officials as “friendly and frank.” During the conversation, the two leaders exchanged views on relations between Moscow and Washington, ongoing efforts to address the war in Ukraine, and wider global security concerns. 

Putin Praises Trump on Milestone Birthday

In a birthday message published by the Kremlin, Putin described Trump as a “bright and remarkable person and politician,” emphasizing what he called a strong mutual understanding between the two leaders. The Russian president expressed confidence that future cooperation could help improve relations between the United States and Russia while contributing to global stability. 

According to Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov, Trump appreciated the gesture, with Putin becoming one of the first world leaders to personally extend birthday wishes to the U.S. president

Ukraine Conflict Discussed

A significant portion of the conversation focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump reportedly reiterated his desire to see an end to hostilities and expressed readiness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a settlement.
